PUNK: Chaos to Couture

I’ve got to hand it to the Met for releasing this performance. When you walk into the “PUNK:Chaos to Couture” exhibit it’s as if you’ve entered one of the underground nightclubs where the revolution found its following. A kaleidoscope of lights throw patterns on the dark walls. In the first gallery, a mockup of a bathroom straight out of CGBG nightclub reveals the chaotic and careless revelry of punk raves. The exhibit is not only visual, it is inviting and gives you the chance to become part of the movement.

Punk got its start in the 1970s, originating out of two music capitals, New York City and London. Bands such as The Ramones, The Talking Heads and The Sex Pistols helped the culture emerge and with it came the fashion. “PUNK: Chaos to Couture” mixes the Haute couture with the do-it-yourself rips and tears of punk style. The mannequins are decked out in spiky wigs of neon colors, silver, bright white and gothic black. They lean forward and peer down at you as you navigate the glittering floors of the exhibit. The clothing is the epitome of the movement with Vivienne Westwood gowns made from elaborate and unconventional materials. Giant safety pins bind tight jeans and leather jackets. The exhibit is both magnetic and dangerous. And it’s a must see.

Chaos to Couture is on display until Aug. 14.
